In the Beginning...

In the winter of 1961, Brookfield High School was being built, with the surrounding area consisting mainly of farmland. By spring of 1962, BHS was almost complete and by September, Brookfield opened its doors. Yet the school was much different than it is today. It only consisted of grades 9 and 10, and the credit system and  individual subject promotions did not exist. Brookfield was still in its very early stages, many new plans were being thought of.

The entrance used to be at the on Brookfield Road side , but has now been moved to the side where the parking lot is. Since the area was so undeveloped, 98% of the students came from the Heron Road area. Later, students piled in from Fielding, Carleton Heights and Holy Cross. Brookfield's spacious ground was left untouched , giving us the distinction of being not only the first Ottawa school to have colour on the outside, but also the school with the most open space.
Beginning with just the English/ History hall, Brookfield expanded, at several points, gaping holes were left in the French hall, as the Library was being added to the school. Within the school, the wall tiles are the originals. Over the years many renovations have been made to such things as the cafeteria, and the gym.
