WORLD
VOICES CHOIR The World Voices Choir from Brookfield High School is a group that seeks to combine excellence in performance with a love of world music and a passion for global citizenship. As a group, choir members sing and speak in well over a dozen languages and study music from Traditional cultures the world over.
In the recent past, the choir has been priviledged to perform for both former UN Special Envoy for HIV/Aids Stephen Lewis, and for current envoy Elizabeth Mataka. Locally they have performed in the Senate, as well as having performed both in the West Block and on the steps of Parliament Hill. They have performed numerous times for the Canadian International Development Agency. In June the World Voices Choir performed for more than 10,000 people at the RCMP Sunset Ceremonies, which features the RCMP Musical Ride. The sponsor for the evening was the RCMP Human Resources Employment Equity Program. The choir have been guests on CBC Radio’s Ontario Today and CBC Morning as part of Share Central. They have been featured in documentaries on both CBC Radio and Television, and were recently featured in a video by the George Lucas Foundation. The group has performed with noted composer Paul Halley and gospel singer Kathy Grant, as well as with South African Cellist Francois LaRoux. The choir performs regularly for the Ottawa Chapter of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.
Their second CD, entitled, ‘We Have A Dream’, was recently completed and will be released February 22 at the National Library of Canada. Proceeds from the CD will support ongoing projects within the school, with a dedicated portion being split between the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and the Microcredit loan organization, “Kiva”. Through Kiva, we will support microcredit loan programs functioning in the 73 birth countries represented by students at our school.
The group's conductor and artistic director is Jeannie Hunter. She can be contacted at the school by phone (613-733-0610) or by email (jeannie.hunter@ocdsb.ca).
