The Library
One of Ontario’s Best! Brookfield High School is privileged to have not only one of the largest school libraries in the Ottawa Carleton District School Board but it holds one of the biggest collections as well, with over 25,000 titles. About 20% of the collection is deemed leisure reading and is divided between English and French fiction (2000) and paperback novels (3000). The library provides over 500 English, as a second language, novels, a new, very popular graphic novel section and a small collection of novels in Spanish and German. Showcases featuring a specific area of the collection are changed biweekly. In addition there are over 50 current magazines and 3 daily papers available to read in the library plus a varied collection of print reference materials. Students are provided research assistance through handouts, linking them to the Ontario government sponsored databases, Statistics Canada and all major Canadian newspapers in electronic format. Steps for completing a bibliography, footnoting and avoiding plagiarism are always at the circulation desk. A partnership agreement with Carleton University allows senior students to borrow from their collection. Teachers work with the teacher-librarian to select appropriate research topics and books are often preselected to ensure that all students get the individual help they require. Both Ms. Laura Bourque and her assistant, Ms. Mary Smith spend considerable time researching materials in order to provide Brookfield’s students with materials to support the broad selection of topics taught in the school. A set of 14 computers is provided for class research with an additional 10 computers set aside for senior students on spare periods. Free single copy printing is provided for all students. This is a remarkable service which enables students to have copies of the materials they need without putting the library’s large variety of reference materials at risk. The library maintains copies of past yearbooks, features student art on the shelves and ceiling and has a series of welcoming stands containing new books for the students to peruse. It is truly a great place to visit and learn.
